- A $1 trillion infrastructure bill is passing through Senate with bipartisan support as a final vote is expected this week. The bill will support the funding of repairs to roads, bridges, and waterways as well as promoting electric vehicles, biking, and pedestrian access.
- Forgotten wells are a growing problem in West Texas due to corroding cement plugs that allow chemicals to leak into groundwater supplies and methane to be released into the atmosphere. Since many of these wells were drilled before modern record-keeping and plugging rules were established, they can be difficult to locate and sometimes were never plugged at all.
- Levels of COVID-19 found in Houston's wastewater indicate that the virus will surge in the coming weeks. Health officials have reported "more than three times as much virus in the system as there was last July" and are heavily encouraging vaccination.
- San Antonio has a giant snail problem! Giant applesnails, native to South America, are threatening the ecosystem of the San Antonio River. The San Antonio River Authority is asking the community to report sightings of this invasive species and is planning on training volunteers to track and remove egg cases.
