Central Texas Section: Operator-Focus Meeting

Presentation Title: Mastering MBR: Navigating Start-Up and Achieving Sustainable Operation

Presentation Summary: Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) system is an advanced technology that can be used to meet stringent discharge limits. Combining biological treatment with membrane filtration, MBR systems efficiently remove suspended solids, organic matter, and nutrients, producing high-quality effluent suitable for reuse or release into sensitive environments. However, they require careful management to prevent membrane fouling and ensure long-term performance. The start-up and operation of the MBR system involved navigating several challenges, from establishing a stable biological system and conditioning membranes to managing fouling, energy consumption, and flow variations. While these challenges can be significant, with the right strategies in place and collaboration between plant staff and engineers, the MBR system can deliver high-quality effluent to meet stringent permit requirements and provide additional capacity, especially on-site constrained facilities. This presentation will provide case studies of MBR start-up and optimization success stories.
