The EPA's Inspector General has raised questions about the ability of regulators to assess the levels of dangerous chemicals in biosolids. According to officials: “The EPA is unable to state whether, and at what level, the pollutants found in biosolids pose a risk to human health or the environment.”
While the presence of these pollutants is not necessarily a risk to public health or the environment, expect the EPA to continue to evaluate their testing capacity, while state agencies that regulate biosolids application may change their testing procedures or standards if they deem it necessary.
